| September's Essence: Frankincense Originating in Ethiopia, India, Somalia, Saudi Arabia and Yemen, the Frankincense tree is small and shrubby with white flowers. It's milky resin, which seeps from incisions or cuts made in the tree's bark, hardens into orangy-brown ''tears" from which essential oil is steam-distilled. Traditionally burned as an offering in religious ceremonies, it's fragrance is fresh, citrusy, with turpentine top notes and sweet, balsamic and woody undertones. It blends well with florals, other woods, spices and citruses, as well as with patchouli, clary sage, rosemary, basil and vetiver. Frankincense is excellent in both massage treatments and in the bath. It is a great skincare additive, especially for sensitive or mature skin. It is useful in treating colds and respiratory illnesses. It is also marvelous used in aroma lamps, or inhaled straight from the essential oil bottle. It is a calming scent, but also revitalizing and uplifting. It is valuable in meditations and prayers, inspiring a deepening of mystical states, as well as clearing both mind and home or room ambiance. It helps break links with past bad memories, and was believed to ward off bad spirits. . |
